Types of physical activity

What types of physical activity?

Any type of physical activity is beneficial. Just encouraging children and young people to reduce the amount of time they spend sitting still or being inactive is a good starting point!

All of the activities within Active Clubs would make a great contribution to the one hour a day target. They also encourage development of many basic skills that children and young people need to learn in order to confidently take part in physical activity. For example:

Active Games – which include running, jumping, skipping and hopping to help get the heart pumping.

Warming Up, Cooling Down – which include balancing, bending and stretching to help build muscle strength and flexibility.

Games Making – which include throwing, catching, hitting and kicking to help develop coordination.

Heath Related Exercise – to help understand where parts of their bodies are and what they can do to be healthy.
