Benefits of physical activity

Being active is important, especially during childhood and adolescence when children and young people are growing and developing. It helps them to:
  • Grow up healthy and strong
  • Be happy
  • Sleep well at night
  • Listen and learn at school
  • Control their weight
  • Mix with others
  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Manage their behaviour
  • Express themselves

How much physical activity?

To improve health, it is recommended that all children and young people do a minimum of one hour of moderate physical activity every day.

It may sound a lot but it doesn’t have to be done all at once. The hour a day of activity can be broken down into chunks of time throughout the day – e.g. through a mix of 10, 15, 20 or 30 minute slots.
