Practical ideas

Developing a physical activity programme doesn’t have to be time consuming, complicated or expensive. It’s about providing children and young people with opportunities to be active by providing enthusiasm, space, ideas and basic equipment.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Create an environment that promotes activity
  • Make activity fun!
  • Inspire activity using idea cards or play leaders
  • Offer the opportunity for free play
  • Provide a basic equipment box
  • Allocate areas for different activities
  • Promote different activities on different days of the week
  • Change some of the activities offered occasionally
  • Encourage modified/small group versions of traditional games
  • Provide opportunities for children to work towards an activity goal
  • Hold a special activity event/promotion
  • Offer a variety of activities and encourage ‘something different’
  • Provide opportunities for older children to become activity leaders
  • Identify pathways into community sports clubs
  • Link into other relevant local initiatives
  • Involve parents
