Expanding the programme

For those wanting to provide a wider range of activity opportunities for children and young people, it is important that any plans are realistic. You should also consult the children and young people themselves to make sure that everyone’s needs and preferences are considered, particularly those you are targeting, i.e. those who are least active.

In expanding the programme it is useful to think about:

Where you are now?

  • What activity is currently offered and what resources do you have available?
  • How many are taking part?

Where would you like to be?

  • Specifically, how would you like to develop?

How you will get there?

  • What action needs to be taken to reach your goals?

How will you monitor the programme?

  • How will you know when you have reached your goals?
To help with this process, it may be useful to use an audit to assess your current situation and form some ideas for how physical activity provision can be developed further. Also, use an action plan to assess what needs to be done and by whom, as well as any resource/cost implications and a timeline for completion.
