The Active Clubs Pack was written and produced in 2002 by the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity and Heath (BHFNC) and was developed in consultation with playworkers and young people.
In partnership with Kids’ Clubs Network (now 4Children), funding was secured from Sport England and the Department of Health to support the initial dissemination of the pack via training throughout England; the British Heart Foundation supported the initial dissemination of the packs in the home countries.
4Children coordinated the Tutor training in England, and coordination was run by Playboard in Northern Ireland, Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs in Wales and Scottish Out of School Care Network in Scotland. These organisations continue to support the programme.
The BHF now supports the dissemination of Active Clubs across the UK. The project team are now based at the BHFNC at Loughborough University and continue to work in partnership with 4Children and BHF to coordinate and manage the dissemination of Active Clubs.
Since the introduction of the programme in 2003, over 450 people have become trained Active Club Tutors and there are over 2,000 trained playworkers delivering Active Clubs to children and young people nationally.
