What I/we did:
I organised the Active Clubs workshop for leaders of holiday clubs and uniformed groups (brownies, guides, scouts etc) as part of my role in Community Sports and Active Lifestyles, South Gloucestershire Council. The Active Clubs workshop was held on a Saturday morning at a local Leisure centre in March and was attended by 17 leaders from various clubs in South Gloucestershire.
Why I/we did it:
Within my role in Community Sport and Active Lifestyles we have a Local Area Agreement to increase physical activity. I work on various interventions for this scheme including offering taster activity sessions to various clubs and groups (brownies, scouts, holiday clubs). The taster sessions we had previously been offering were great; however, the club leaders wanted to use some of the activity ideas to replicate in their club. There was need to offer some kind of training and resources to help these clubs sustain the activities which the children had enjoyed so much during the taster session. The Active Clubs scheme, complete with the resources, seemed the ideal opportunity.
What I/we wanted to achieve:
I wanted to be able to offer leaders from such groups the opportunity to increase activity in their club beyond the one off taster sessions we had already been offering.
A short description of what I/we did:
We sent flyers and invites -- such as leader bulletins, newsletters and website advertisements -- around South Glos uniformed groups districts about the Active Clubs scheme. We offered up to two leaders from a club/pack the chance of attending the workshop for free. We also felt that it would be beneficial to link this with the already existing 'taster sessions' offered to these groups.
What worked well:
The workshop was well attended and enabled all the leaders who came to take something positive away from the day. It also worked well offering a taster session from one of our coaching teams so that the leaders could see in practice how the games/activities get delivered at their clubs. I also wanted to use the first workshop for those that would have little/no practical experience or training delivering physical activity -- this worked well.
Problems and/or issues:
The practical sessions seemed to really benefit the leaders, so they could have benefited from some more time looking at these -- perhaps thinking about splitting the workshop across two days. Holding a workshop with leaders from a mixture of settings can be tricky (guides, scouts etc. work with one age but holiday clubs have multiple ages to satisfy).
Key messages:
The resource and workshop is a fantastic resource which can be adapted and made suitable for all OSC settings.
Other comments:
We have a waiting list for the next workshop!
