Using the Activity Pack with the Netball Club

What I/we did:
I have tried a few of the idea sheets. One week I have years 4, 5 and 6, and the following week I have year 3 children. I have tried the exercises with both successfully.

Why I/we did it:
I have taken a career change and have only been working at the school since September. When we first arrived on the netball court, I tended to do the same warm up and practice exercises each week, as my knowledge of group play games was limited. The children were constantly keen to play a proper game.

What I/we wanted to achieve:
I wanted to find exercises that improved their netball skills, were fun and gave them variety, and gave me the knowledge and confidence to try new things with the group.

A short description of what I/we did:
We have tried about six of the different activity cards so far as part of the warm up or skill exercises.

What worked well:
The favourite and most successful has been the ball chase. I extended it and altered it the following week to incorporate another card where the children have animal names, and when I shout out that animal, the child with that name has to run around the circle whilst the ball chase is going on. This taught them to keep on their toes, listen, look at where people were, and be accurate with passes and many other skills. It has been so successful that they ask to play it every week, and when I say it is time for a different game, they groan! What a turn around! It is such fun.

Problems and/or issues:
Some children didn't pay enough attention and instead of waiting to receive the ball whilst facing their potential thrower, they were day dreaming and got a ball thrown at them. Thankfully no one got hurt though, and they remembered to look out for the ball after that! I was worried that whoever dropped the ball might get moaned or shouted at, but so many people drop it that they all end up laughing and having to go faster.

Key messages:
The pack has been ideal for someone inexperienced like me to have some new ideas up my sleeve and have the confidence to try something new. It has given the children enjoyment of an outdoor sport and hopefully some new skills. The pack lives in the staff room and people dip in and out of it, taking and returning cards (for those who are not so keen to admit that they need new ideas!) Great!
