Active Club & Birmingham PlayCare Network

Birmingham PlayCare Network is a voluntary organisation working in Birmingham to support the out of school sector. In 2004 two members of staff received training from The British Heart Foundation to become Active Club pack tutors. We delivered our first training session on 22 June 2004 to 19 eager participants from 10 different clubs.  Since then we have gone on to deliver another 8 sessions to just over 120 play workers from more than 50 different settings.

The main aim of the workshop is to get the play workers familiar with the pack and to start using the activity cards straight away.  We hope that by demonstrating how easy it is to play the games with the minimum amount of equipment, it will make them more likely to use the pack with the children.

It has been great to see the play workers inspired and motivated to increase physical activity in their clubs.  They are encouraged to set action plans to identify how the staff and children will be creating opportunities to play in a physical way.

Play workers reported that the training was “Very good, like participation of play workers, informative” (Hollywood After School Club). “Really enjoyed it and can use what I learnt in my club setting.” As tutors we have thoroughly enjoyed delivering the training. It is fun, fast paced and energetic.
